Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the 27th Week of the Year.
1st Reading – Genesis 2:18-24
God creates all the wild animals and brings them to the man, but none proves to be a suitable partner.
God then builds up a woman from the rib that he has taken from the man, who recognizes her as his partner for life.
Psalm – 128:1-6
“May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.”
God blesses us through our family and faithful adherence to the Lord’s commands.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 2:9-11
Jesus becomes “lower than the angels” to taste death for our salvation.
Through his gracious sacrifice, we are welcomed into God’s family of faith.
Gospel – Mark 10:2-16
Jesus responds to questions about divorce, and he speaks about the sanctity of marriage.
The Lord then welcomes the children to come to him, and he blesses and embraces them.

Those who are blameless and observe the Lord’s decrees will live.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 2:6-10
Paul preaches the wisdom of God as it has been revealed through the Spirit.
Gospel – Matthew 5:17-37
Jesus teaches how his commandments far exceed the precepts of the law.
The Lord speaks forcefully about killing, adultery, divorce and false oaths.

Here are some of the main themes in the readings for the 27th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Genesis 2:18-24
God makes different animals for the man (who gives them names) but none are a suitable partner. God casts a deep sleep on the man and fashions a woman from one of his ribs.
Psalm – 128:1-6
“May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.” The man who follows the Lord is blessed in his family, with sufficient food and prosperity.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 2:9-11
The passage reflects on the person of Jesus, who was “for a little while” made “lower than the angels” that he might taste death. Christ is the one through whom all things exist, and he made our salvation perfect through his suffering.
Gospel – Mark 10:2-16
Jesus responds to a question from a Pharisee about divorce. Jesus then says, “Let the children come to me” when they were being prevented by the disciples.
