Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of Lent

Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Genesis 15:5-12,17-18

  • God promises Abram that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
  • God enters into a covenant with Abram and promises to give his descendants land from the Wadi of Egypt to the Euphrates River.

Psalm – 27:1,7-9,13-14

  • “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”
  • With the Lord as our refuge, we have courage to face our fears.

2nd Reading – Philippians 3:17-4:1

  • Paul exhorts the people to imitate his example in following the cross of Christ.
  • Our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we await the savior who will change our lowly body to conform to his glorified body.

Gospel – Luke 9:28b-36

  • Jesus takes Peter, John, and James up a mountain where he is transfigured in glory.
  • Christ is speaking with Moses and Elijah, and they are discussing the “exodus” that he will accomplish in Jerusalem.
  • The Father’s voice speaks from a cloud, saying, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”

Study, Pray, Serve: 1st Sunday of Lent

Let’s examine some of the main themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 1st Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Deuteronomy 26:4-10

  • Moses recalls God’s mighty works that freed the people from slavery in Egypt.
  • Inspired by this memory they now bring forth the firstfruits of their produce to honor the Lord in the Promised Land.

Psalm – 91:1-2,10-15

  • “Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.”
  • We place our trust in God, who sustains us when we are in distress.

2nd Reading – Romans 10:8-13

  • If we confess with the mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him, we will be saved.
  • This salvation in Christ is available to all, there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.

Gospel – Luke 4:1-13

  • Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, is led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil.
  • The Lord responds to the devil’s temptations, quoting Scripture until the devil departs for a time.
