Let’s explore the themes we find in the Mass readings for the 6th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Jeremiah 17:5-8
People are cursed when they turn away from the Lord and put their trust in others.
People are blessed when they put their trust in the Lord, and they are sustained in times of distress.
Psalm – 1:1-4,6
“Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.”
Those who delight in the Lord will be strengthened like a tree planted near running water.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:12,16-20
The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope.
Raised from the dead, Christ is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Gospel – Luke 6:17,20-26
Luke’s “Beatitudes” have many similarities to those found in Matthew 5:1-12.
However, Luke also offers a list of “woes” that offer a somber reminder to keep ourselves fixed on the Lord.
