Let’s explore some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Joshua 5:9a,10-12

  • On the plains of Jericho, the people celebrated the Passover and ate the fruit of the land, and on that same day the manna ceased.

Psalm – 34:2-7

  • “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
  • We praise and bless the Lord, who delivers us from all our fears and saves us.

2nd Reading – 2nd Corinthians 5:17-21

  • God has reconciled us to himself in Christ, and we are now a new creation.
  • Paul then exhorts us to always be reconciled to God.

Gospel – Luke 15:1-3,11-32

  • A younger son demands his inheritance and departs from his father and older brother where he squanders his money.
  • The younger son repents and returns to his father, who welcomes him with compassion and joy.
  • When the older son hears of this, he refuses to celebrate, and the father gently comes to him to teach a lesson about reconciliation.
