Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 29th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Isaiah 53:10-11
Here the “suffering servant” faces hardship and affliction.
Through this suffering, however, God will bring forth blessings and redemption.
Psalm – 33:4-5,18-20,22
“Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.”
We wait for the Lord, who is trustworthy, kind, and just, to deliver us from death.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 4:14-16
Jesus is our great high priest who has passed through the heavens.
We can confidently approach him, for he was tested like us in every way, yet without sin.
Gospel – Mark 10:35-45
James and John approach Jesus, asking for the honor of sitting next to him in his glory.
When the Lord asks if they will drink the cup and be baptized in his baptism, they say yes.
When the other disciples become indignant, Jesus teaches them that to be great they must follow his example and become the servant of all.
