Let’s examine some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
1st Reading – Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11
A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord!
Fear not, but speak comfort: Here is your God who comes with power!
Psalm – 85:9-14
“Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.”
From the Lord shall come kindness and truth, justice and peace.
2nd Reading – 2nd Peter 3:8-14
With the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
The day of the Lord will come suddenly; thus we conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion, eager to be found without spot or blemish.
Gospel – Mark 1:1-8
John the Baptist proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
John proclaims, “One mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Here are some of the main themes in our Mass Readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.
1st Reading – Isaiah 63:16b-17,19b; 64:2-7
Recognizing their sinful ways, the people acknowledge their guilt.
As they ask the Lord pardon from their sins, they recognize God’s might; the Lord is the potter, and we are the clay.
Psalm – 80:2-3,15-16,18-19
“Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.”
We recognize our need for God’s power to save us and give us life.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 1:3-9
Paul gives thanks to God for the grace that the people have received in Christ Jesus.
God’s faithfulness will help the people remain in fellowship with the Lord and firm to the end.
Gospel – Mark 13:33-37
Jesus exhorts the disciples to be watchful and alert.
The Lord stresses the point that they do not know when the time will come, but when it does, it will be swift and unexpected.
