Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica.
1st Reading – Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12
The angel brings the prophet to the entrance of the temple, and the water that was flowing out becomes a great river.
Wherever the river flows every living plant and animal flourishes and teems with life.
Psalm – 46:2-3,5-6,8-9
“The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.”
God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in times of distress.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 3:9c-11,16-17
We are God’s building with Christ as the foundation.
We are temples of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us.
Gospel – John 2:13-22
Seeing all the sellers and money changers in the temple area, Jesus makes a whip of cords and drives them all out.
Speaking of his own body, Jesus says “destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
