Here are some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 18th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Exodus 16:2-4,12-15
Complaining about their hunger, the people grumble against Moses and Aaron.
The Lord responds, offering quail and manna for the people to eat.
Psalm – 78:3-4,23-25,54
“The Lord gave them bread from heaven.”
The psalm recalls the miracle of the manna that God gave the children of Israel.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 4:17,20-24
We put away the old self of our former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires.
Renewed in spirit, we put on the new self, created in God’s righteousness and truth.
Gospel – John 6:24-35
Amazed by the miracle of the fishes and loaves, the crowd follows Jesus back to Capernaum.
Jesus references the miracle of the manna, but then boldly claims, “I am the bread of life.”
