Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of the Year

Let’s review some of the themes that we find in the Mass Readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 62:1-5

  • The prophet proclaims that Jerusalem will be vindicated and glorified.
  • The nations will see how God rejoices in the people who were formerly forsaken.

Psalm – 96:1-3,7-10

  • “Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.”
  • We sing to the Lord, announcing his salvation and giving glory to God.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 12:4-11

  • There are different gifts, service, and types of work, but it is the same Spirit and Lord who produces them.
  • To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some particular benefit.

Gospel – John 2:1-11

  • Jesus is at a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and when the wine runs out the Lord performs a miracle and turns water into wine.
  • This is not a normal wine; it is tested by the headwaiter who declares it is the best.
