Study, Pray, Serve: 5th Sunday of Easter

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 5th Week of Easter.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 14:21-27

  • Paul and Barnabas travel through several cities proclaiming the Good News and exhorting the disciples.
  • They encourage them to persevere, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”

Psalm – 145:8-13

  • “I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.”
  • The Lord is gracious and merciful, good to all, and his dominion will endure forever.

2nd Reading – Revelation 21:1-5a

  • John has a vision of a new heaven and a new earth, and he sees the new Jerusalem.
  • God will dwell with his people, wiping away every tear from their eyes.

Gospel – John 13:31-33a,34-35

  • Jesus proclaims that God is now glorified in the Son of Man.
  • The Lord gives his disciples a new commandment: love on another.

Study, Pray, Serve: 4th Sunday of Easter

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of Easter.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 13:14,43-52

  • Paul and Barnabas preach the Gospel in Antioch in Pisidia, what is today a central and southern region in Turkey.
  • While many Jews accept their preaching, jealousy and abuse break out, so the Apostles turn their attention to the Gentiles and tell them about Jesus.

Psalm – 100:1-3,5

  • “We are his people, the sheep of his flock.”
  • We sing joyfully to the Lord who made us, whose kindness endures forever.

2nd Reading – Revelation 7:9,14b-17

  • John’s vision reveals a countless multitude who stand before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches.
  • John is told that these people have survived great distress, and their robes were made white in the blood of the Lamb.

Gospel – 10:27-30

  • Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice; they know and follow him.
  • The Father has given them to Jesus, and no one can take the sheep from his hand.
