Study, Pray, Serve: 14th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 14th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Ezekiel 2:2-5

  • The prophet is sent by God to speak to a people who are stubborn and obstinate of heart.
  • Ezekiel must speak faithfully, so that whether they heed or resist, they will know that a prophet has been among them.

Psalm – 123:1-4

  • “Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.”
  • We call upon the Lord to have pity on us when we have been mocked or held in contempt by the world.

2nd Reading – 2nd Corinthians 12:7-10

  • That he might not become too elated, Paul is given a “thorn in the flesh.”
  • Recognizing his weaknesses, Paul discovers that with the power of Christ he becomes strong.

Gospel – Mark 6:1-6

  • Jesus arrives at his native place and the people take offense at him.
  • Because of their lack of faith, the Lord does not perform any mighty deeds there.
