Let’s explore some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of Easter.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 5:12-16

  • The apostles, esteemed by the people, perform signs and wonders of healing.
  • Great numbers of men and women become believers in the Lord.

Psalm – 118:2-4,13-15,22-24

  • “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.”
  • Our strength and our courage come from the Lord, and we are glad and rejoice.

2nd Reading – Revelation 1:9-11a,12-13,17-19

  • John experiences a glorious vision of the son of man who tells him to not be afraid, and says, “I once was dead, but now I am alive forever.”
  • John is commanded to write down what he has seen, including what is yet to come.

Gospel – John 20:19-31

  • Jesus passes through locked doors and appears to the disciples saying, “Peace be with you.”
  • Thomas is absent from the meeting, and one week later Jesus appears to him and tells him to not be unbelieving, but believe.

Let’s review some of the main themes in the Mass readings for Easter Day.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 10:34a,37-43

  • Peter proclaims the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to the crowd.
  • The disciples are witnesses of Christ and testify on his behalf for the forgiveness of sins.

Psalm 118: 1-2,16-17,22-23

  • “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”
  • We give thanks for the might and glory of God who is merciful to us.

2nd Reading – Colossians 3:1-4

  • You have died with Christ, and your life is hidden with God.
  • When Christ your life appears, you will appear with him in glory.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 5:6b-8

  • We clear out the old yeast of malice and wickedness.
  • We make a new batch of dough with the new yeast of sincerity and truth.

Gospel – John 20:1-9

  • Mary Magdalene finds the tomb empty and runs to tell Peter and the other disciple.
  • Peter and the other disciple run back to the tomb.
  • They had not yet understood that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
