Study, Pray, Serve: 3rd Sunday of the Year

Let’s take a look at some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 3rd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Jonah 3:1-5,10

  • Jonah fulfills God’s command and travels to Nineveh with a message of destruction and doom.
  • The people take the message to heart, and they repent by fasting and wearing sackcloth.

Psalm – 25:4-9

  • “Teach me your ways, O Lord.”
  • We ask the Lord to guide us in truth, as we remember God’s kindness and compassion.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 7:29-31

  • Paul exhorts the people that the present world is passing away.
  • He encourages them to detach from earthly concerns and relationships.

Gospel – Mark 1:14-20

  • After the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus continues to preach about repentance, saying that the Kingdom of God is at hand.
  • Jesus then calls Peter, Andrew, James and John by name; they immediately follow the Lord.

Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of the Year

Let’s explore some of the themes that are present in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – 1st Samuel 3:3b-10,19

  • The Lord repeatedly calls Samuel in the night by name.
  • Eli, a priest of the Lord, teaches Samuel that when he hears the Lord call, he is to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Psalm 40:2,4,7-10

  • “Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will.”
  • While praising God’s justice, we wait for the Lord and obey his commandments.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 6:13c-15a,17-20

  • The body is made for the Lord, and so we avoid immorality.
  • Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit; therefore, we glorify God in our bodies.

Gospel – John 1:35-42

  • John the Baptist sees Jesus walking by and he tells two of his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
  • These disciples follow Jesus, who invites them to “come, and see” where he is staying.
  • One of these disciples, Andrew, brings his brother Simon to Jesus, who gives him a new name: Peter.
