Study, Pray, Serve: 26th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 26th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Amos 6:1a,4-7

• Amos calls out the wealthy and complacent, who have overlooked the collapse of the people.
• Their wanton revelry will be done away with, and they will be the first to go into exile.

Psalm – 146:7-10

• “Praise the Lord, my soul”
• God protects and sustains all those in need.

2nd Reading – 1st Timothy 6:11-16

• Timothy is urged to live virtuously as he holds firm in his faith.
• Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords, has all honor and eternal power.

Gospel – Luke 16:19-31

• Jesus offers the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, revealing the reversal of fortune in the afterlife.
• In the parable Christ notes that if people do not listen to “Moses and the prophets” they will not believe, even if someone should rise from the dead.
