Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 22nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Sirach 3:17-18,20,28-29

  • A humble person is more beloved than a giver of gifts and finds favor with God.
  • A wise person seeks to listen to the insights of people and proverbs.

Psalm – 68:4-7,10-11

  • “God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.”
  • God restores the land and gives a home to the forsaken.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 12:18-19,22-24a

  • We approach Mount Zion, the city of the living God.
  • Surrounded by countless angels and the assembly of heaven, we encounter Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant.

Gospel – Luke 14:1,7-14

  • At a banquet, Jesus offers a parable on humility that invites people to sit in the lowest place.
  • The Lord continues by inviting us to help people who are unable to repay us.
