
Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 20th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Jeremiah 38:4-6,8-10
- Jeremiah is cast into a cistern at the threat of his enemies.
- Ebed-melech, a court official, pleads for his release and releases him from the cistern.
Psalm – 40:2-4,18
- “Lord, come to my aid!”
- Afflicted and poor, the Lord draws us out from the pit of destruction.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 12:1-4
- Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we persevere in running the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
- We continue in our struggle against sin as we recall how Christ endured the Cross.
Gospel – Luke 12:49-52
- The Lord comes to set a fire blazing upon the earth that will cause division, even among families.
