Here are some of the themes that we discern in Mass readings for the 19th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Wisdom 18:6-9

  • On the night of the Passover the children of Israel put their faith in God, offering sacrifice.
  • The Lord punished their adversaries and destroyed their foes.

Psalm – 33:1,12,18-22

  • “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.”
  • “We wait for the Lord, who is our help and our shield.”

2nd Reading – Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19

  • “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things unseen.”
  • Abraham is an example of faith, trusting in God when put to the test.

Gospel – Luke 12:32-48

  • Jesus instructs his disciples, telling them that where their treasure is, there also will their hearts be.
  • The Lord offers a parable about servants awaiting their master’s return, saying that “much will be required of the person entrusted with much.”
