Let’s explore some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 18th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23

  • All things are vanity!
  • All labor and toil occupy us with sorrow and grief, only to pass away.

Psalm – 90:3-6,12-14,17

  • “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
  • Mindful that our lives are a brief span, we call upon God to be gracious and bless us.

Colossians 3:1-5,9-11

  • Raised with Christ in glory, we seek what is above.
  • We put to death the earthly things of this life, and put on the new self in Christ.

Gospel Luke 12:13-21

  • Jesus warns against all greed, reminding us that life does not consist of possessions.
  • The Lord then offers a parable about a rich man whose life is about to end.
