Study, Pray, Serve: 16th Sunday of the Year

Let’s examine some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the 16th Week of the Year.

1st Reading – Genesis 18:1-10a

  • Abraham and Sarah provide hospitality to three travelers.
  • One of the men makes a prophecy that Sarah will have a son in the following year.

Psalm – 15:2-5

  • “He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”
  • Our love for the Lord is made known when our thoughts, words, and actions are pure.

2nd Reading – Colossians 1:24-28

  • Our sufferings participate in the afflictions of Christ through our connection to him.
  • We make known what God has done in Christ through our words and example.

Gospel – Luke 10:38-42

  • Martha implores Jesus to make her sister, Mary, help her with the serving.
  • Jesus chides Martha, saying that Mary has chosen the better part by taking the time to listen to his words.
