
Let’s examine some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the 16th Week of the Year.
1st Reading – Genesis 18:1-10a
- Abraham and Sarah provide hospitality to three travelers.
- One of the men makes a prophecy that Sarah will have a son in the following year.
Psalm – 15:2-5
- “He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”
- Our love for the Lord is made known when our thoughts, words, and actions are pure.
2nd Reading – Colossians 1:24-28
- Our sufferings participate in the afflictions of Christ through our connection to him.
- We make known what God has done in Christ through our words and example.
Gospel – Luke 10:38-42
- Martha implores Jesus to make her sister, Mary, help her with the serving.
- Jesus chides Martha, saying that Mary has chosen the better part by taking the time to listen to his words.
