Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 5th Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 43:16-21

  • The Lord is doing something new and marvelous, inviting the people to see it.
  • Springing forth, God provides a mighty, life-giving river for the people to drink.

Psalm – 126:1-6

    • “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”
    • The captivity that began in sorrow has now led to a return with laughter and rejoicing.

    2nd Reading – Philippians 3:8-14

    • Paul considers everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord.
    • While we are straining toward the day of our resurrection, we pursue our goal: a life in Christ.

    Gospel – John 8:1-11

    • A woman caught in adultery is brought to Jesus as a crowd gathers around to stone her to death.
    • The Lord responds to them by saying, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
    • After the crowd departs, Jesus does not condemn her, but urges her to go and sin no more.
