Let’s take a look at the themes in the Mass readings for the 7th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – 1st Samuel 26:2,7-9,12-13,22-23

  • David and Abishai come upon Saul at night as he is sleeping in the midst of his soldiers.
  • David spares Saul’s life and declares that he would not harm the Lord’s anointed.

Psalm – 103: 1-4,8,10,12-13

  • “The Lord is kind and merciful.”
  • The Lord has compassion for us, pardoning our iniquities and redeeming our lives.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:45-49

  • The first man, Adam, is earthly; the second man, Jesus, is heavenly.
  • Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one.

Gospel – Luke 6:27-38

  • The Lord teaches his disciples to love their enemies and do good to those who hate them.
  • Jesus adds that his disciples be merciful, stop judging and condemning, and forgive one another.
