Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 8th Week of the Year.

1st Reading – Sirach 27:4-7

  • Our speech reveals our inner thoughts and the direction of our actions.
  • When we are tested, our speech uncovers our faults and personal care.

Psalm – 92:2-3,13-16

  • “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.”
  • When we stay close to the Lord we flourish and bear fruit.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:54-58

  • The sting of death is sin, and we give thanks to God for the victory through Jesus Christ.
  • We remain steadfast and devoted to our work for the Lord.

Gospel – Luke 6:39-45

  • Before we point out the faults of others, we first acknowledge our own.
  • Good or bad, a tree is known by its fruit; in the same way, we are known by the fruitfulness of our lives.
