Study, Pray, Serve: 6th Sunday of the Year

Let’s explore the themes we find in the Mass readings for the 6th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Jeremiah 17:5-8

  • People are cursed when they turn away from the Lord and put their trust in others.
  • People are blessed when they put their trust in the Lord, and they are sustained in times of distress.

Psalm – 1:1-4,6

  • “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.”
  • Those who delight in the Lord will be strengthened like a tree planted near running water.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:12,16-20

  • The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope.
  • Raised from the dead, Christ is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Gospel – Luke 6:17,20-26

  • Luke’s “Beatitudes” have many similarities to those found in Matthew 5:1-12.
  • However, Luke also offers a list of “woes” that offer a somber reminder to keep ourselves fixed on the Lord.
