Study, Pray, Serve: 5th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 5th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 6:1-2a,3-8

  • The prophet has a vision of the seraphim glorifying God saying, “Holy, holy, holy!”
  • The prophet then declares “Here I am!” when the Lord calls for someone to send.

Psalm – 138:1-5,7-8

  • “In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.”
  • We call upon the Lord, who builds up strength within us.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:1-11

  • Paul recaps key elements about Jesus, inviting the people to hold fast to this knowledge.
  • Through the grace of God, Paul has been sustained to carry out his work.

Gospel – Luke 5:1-11

  • Jesus directs Peter to put out into deep water, and the nets bring in an immense catch of fish.
  • Afterwards, Jesus tells Peter, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”
