Let’s explore the themes we find in the Mass readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Jeremiah 33:14-16

  • God will fulfill the promise made to the house of Israel and Judah.
  • The Lord will raise up for David a just shoot who will do what is right and just.

Psalm – 25:4-5,8-10,14

  • “To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.”
  • With kindness and constancy the Lord guides and teaches us the way.

2nd Reading – 1st Thessalonians 3:12-4:2

  • We increase and abound in love for one another before God.
  • We conduct ourselves in a worthy manner that reflects the instructions we have received.

Gospel – Luke 21:25-28,34-36

  • There will be many signs on the earth and in the heavens before the Son of Man comes.
  • We are called to remain awake and vigilant, so that we are not caught by surprise.
