Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 29th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Isaiah 53:10-11
- Here the “suffering servant” faces hardship and affliction.
- Through this suffering, however, God will bring forth blessings and redemption.
Psalm – 33:4-5,18-20,22
- “Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.”
- We wait for the Lord, who is trustworthy, kind, and just, to deliver us from death.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 4:14-16
- Jesus is our great high priest who has passed through the heavens.
- We can confidently approach him, for he was tested like us in every way, yet without sin.
Gospel – Mark 10:35-45
- James and John approach Jesus, asking for the honor of sitting next to him in his glory.
- When the Lord asks if they will drink the cup and be baptized in his baptism, they say yes.
- When the other disciples become indignant, Jesus teaches them that to be great they must follow his example and become the servant of all.
