Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 22nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Deuteronomy 4:1-2,6-8

  • Moses tells the people to observe the commandments of the Lord.
  • Through their adherence, they will reveal to the nations the wisdom that comes from God.

Psalm – 15:2-5

  • “The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”
  • The virtuous person who fears the Lord will never be disturbed.

2nd Reading – James 1:17-18,21b-22,27

  • We humbly welcome all the good and perfect gifts that come from the Father.
  • We are doers of the word and not hearers only.

Gospel – Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23

  • Jesus quotes Isaiah, responding to the Pharisees that God’s commandments supersede human precepts.
  • The Lord then teaches that the evils that come from within a person (from their hearts) are what defile.
