Study, Pray, Serve: 18th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 18th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Exodus 16:2-4,12-15

  • Complaining about their hunger, the people grumble against Moses and Aaron.
  • The Lord responds, offering quail and manna for the people to eat.

Psalm – 78:3-4,23-25,54

  • “The Lord gave them bread from heaven.”
  • The psalm recalls the miracle of the manna that God gave the children of Israel.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 4:17,20-24

  • We put away the old self of our former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires.
  • Renewed in spirit, we put on the new self, created in God’s righteousness and truth.

Gospel – John 6:24-35

  • Amazed by the miracle of the fishes and loaves, the crowd follows Jesus back to Capernaum.
  • Jesus references the miracle of the manna, but then boldly claims, “I am the bread of life.”
