Here are some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 18th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Exodus 16:2-4,12-15
- Complaining about their hunger, the people grumble against Moses and Aaron.
- The Lord responds, offering quail and manna for the people to eat.
Psalm – 78:3-4,23-25,54
- “The Lord gave them bread from heaven.”
- The psalm recalls the miracle of the manna that God gave the children of Israel.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 4:17,20-24
- We put away the old self of our former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires.
- Renewed in spirit, we put on the new self, created in God’s righteousness and truth.
Gospel – John 6:24-35
- Amazed by the miracle of the fishes and loaves, the crowd follows Jesus back to Capernaum.
- Jesus references the miracle of the manna, but then boldly claims, “I am the bread of life.”
