Let’s explore some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 17th Week of the Year.
1st Reading – 2nd Kings 4:42-44
- Elisha commands that 20 barley loaves be given to feed 100 people.
- The people eat their fill and there is some left over.
Psalm – 145:10-11,15-18
- “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.”
- We give thanks to God, who is just and generous.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 4:1-6
- Paul urges the people to live in a manner worthy of their call, with humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, and peace.
- He reminds them that they possess one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.
Gospel – John 6:1-15
- Jesus performs a miracle, feeding over five thousand men with only five barley loaves and two fish.
- The crowd is satisfied, and there are twelve wicker baskets of fragments left over.
