Photo by Jill Wellington on Pexels.com

Let’s explore some of the themes that are present in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – 1st Samuel 3:3b-10,19

  • The Lord repeatedly calls Samuel in the night by name.
  • Eli, a priest of the Lord, teaches Samuel that when he hears the Lord call, he is to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Psalm 40:2,4,7-10

  • “Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will.”
  • While praising God’s justice, we wait for the Lord and obey his commandments.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 6:13c-15a,17-20

  • The body is made for the Lord, and so we avoid immorality.
  • Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit; therefore, we glorify God in our bodies.

Gospel – John 1:35-42

  • John the Baptist sees Jesus walking by and he tells two of his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
  • These disciples follow Jesus, who invites them to “come, and see” where he is staying.
  • One of these disciples, Andrew, brings his brother Simon to Jesus, who gives him a new name: Peter.
