
Let’s examine some of the themes that surface in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of Advent.
1st Reading – 2nd Samuel 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16
- David proposes to the prophet Nathan that he will build the Temple for the Lord.
- Nathan responds to David, saying that it will be his son who will build the Temple, and David’s throne shall stand firm forever.
Psalm – 89:2-5,27,29
- “For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.”
- We praise the Lord who out of kindness has made a covenant that endures forever.
2nd Reading – Romans 16:25-27
- Paul praises Jesus Christ, who strengthens us to proclaim the Gospel and make known to all nations God’s saving work.
Gospel – Luke 1:26-38
- The angel Gabriel is sent from God to Mary, in order to proclaim her role in salvation history.
- Mary speaks with Gabriel and she accepts the angel’s words.
