Let’s examine some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11

  • A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord!
  • Fear not, but speak comfort: Here is your God who comes with power!

Psalm – 85:9-14

  • “Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.”
  • From the Lord shall come kindness and truth, justice and peace.

2nd Reading – 2nd Peter 3:8-14

  • With the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
  • The day of the Lord will come suddenly; thus we conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion, eager to be found without spot or blemish.

Gospel – Mark 1:1-8

  • John the Baptist proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
  • John proclaims, “One mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
