
Here are some of the main themes in our Mass Readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.
1st Reading – Isaiah 63:16b-17,19b; 64:2-7
- Recognizing their sinful ways, the people acknowledge their guilt.
- As they ask the Lord pardon from their sins, they recognize God’s might; the Lord is the potter, and we are the clay.
Psalm – 80:2-3,15-16,18-19
- “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.”
- We recognize our need for God’s power to save us and give us life.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 1:3-9
- Paul gives thanks to God for the grace that the people have received in Christ Jesus.
- God’s faithfulness will help the people remain in fellowship with the Lord and firm to the end.
Gospel – Mark 13:33-37
- Jesus exhorts the disciples to be watchful and alert.
- The Lord stresses the point that they do not know when the time will come, but when it does, it will be swift and unexpected.
