Here are some of the main themes in our Mass Readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 63:16b-17,19b; 64:2-7

  • Recognizing their sinful ways, the people acknowledge their guilt.
  • As they ask the Lord pardon from their sins, they recognize God’s might; the Lord is the potter, and we are the clay.

Psalm – 80:2-3,15-16,18-19

  • “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.”
  • We recognize our need for God’s power to save us and give us life.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 1:3-9

  • Paul gives thanks to God for the grace that the people have received in Christ Jesus.
  • God’s faithfulness will help the people remain in fellowship with the Lord and firm to the end.

Gospel – Mark 13:33-37

  • Jesus exhorts the disciples to be watchful and alert.
  • The Lord stresses the point that they do not know when the time will come, but when it does, it will be swift and unexpected.
