
Let’s explore some of the themes that emerge in the Mass readings for the 30th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Exodus 22:20-26
- The Lord commands the people to not molest an alien, for they were once aliens in the land of Egypt.
- When lending money to a poor neighbor, the people are not to act as extortioners.
Psalm – 18:2-4,47,51
- “I love you, Lord, my strength.”
- We bless God who is our shield and refuge, the rock that keeps us safe from our enemies.
2nd Reading – Thessalonians 1:5c-10
- Paul reminds the people how through the Holy Spirit they imitated his example and became a model for all believers.
- Their example has spread through the region, giving praise to Jesus Christ.
Gospel – Matthew 22:34-40
- A scholar of the law tests Jesus, asking which commandment is the greatest.
- Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18, showing that we are called to love God and one another.
