Let’s explore some of the themes in the Mass Readings for the 25th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 55:6-9

  • Isaiah urges the people to seek and call upon the Lord while he is near.
  • God’s thoughts and ways and not like ours; as the heavens are high above the earth, so are God’s ways high above our own.

Psalm – 145:2-3,8-9,17-18

  • “The Lord is near to all who call upon him.”
  • God’s goodness and kindness is revealed in the compassion extended to all creation.

2nd Reading – Philippians 1:20c-24,27a

  • Christ is magnified in our bodies, by life or by death.
  • St. Paul is in conflict: death means that he will be with Christ; life means that he is able to serve Christ’s people.

Gospel – Matthew 20:1-16a

  • Jesus offers a parable about a landowner who is generous to the laborers who could not work a full day in his vineyard.
