Study, Pray, Serve: 28th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes in the readings for the 28th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – 2nd Kings 5:14-17

  • Naaman, a foreigner from Syria, is cured of his leprosy after he carries out the command of Elisha to bathe seven times in the Jordan river.
  • Elisha will take no gift for this miracle, and Naaman now worships only the Lord.

Psalm – 98:1-4

  • “The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.”
  • Rejoice, for all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of God.

2nd Reading – 2nd Timothy 2:8-13

  • Paul contrasts the chains he wears with the power of the word of God, which is not chained.
  • We persevere in faith, trusting in the eternal glory and power of Christ, who remains faithful.

Gospel – Luke 17:11-19

  • Jesus cures ten lepers, one of whom is a foreigner…a Samaritan.
  • The foreigner alone gives praise to God and returns to thank Jesus.
