Jesus speaks with an earnest young man who is striving to follow God. There is just one stumbling block: his attachment to possessions keeps him from giving his heart to the Lord.

I think this is a teaching not discussed enough. The hold (and the pain) that comes with attachments is a deep disorder. But, if one pays attention, one can see perhaps more depth to what Jesus advises Than many think. Jesus actually alter’s the young man’s question. The young man seeks reward or profit, eternal life. Jesus recasts the inquiry as a search for the good. Moreover, Jesus also alters the inquiry by saying “If you wish to enter into life,…” That is, Jesus recasts the inquiry as a search for the good to enter into life. I take that to mean this life, here and now; to enter into the Kingdom which is now. A subtle but I think profound recasting.
