Today the universal Church celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica – the cathedral of the city of Rome – reminding us that every church around the world offers us a direct encounter of the living God when we draw near to the altar to pray.
Mary and Joseph are searching for Jesus in Jerusalem, only to find him in the Temple. When asked by his mother his response “I must be in my Father’s house” invites us to follow his example and meet the Lord in church…where he is always present in the tabernacle!
Jesus offers an important insight into how different groups can work together. When we put aside our ego and focus on the Lord’s mission we discover our ability to empower one another in the spirit and mission of Christ.
As the early Church began to grow new ministries were called for as needs were discerned. This is how the Church continues to thrive today: we recognize the need, call forth the people and are guided by key principles to direct our effort. Now get to work!
The Gospel of Mark reveals the power of the healing ministry of Jesus. From the beginning the Church has continued this work; may our lives today be open to this ministry as we seek to be instruments of the Lord’s healing touch.
The Lord offers an example of ministry and then empowers the Apostles to do the same. Our Church today is not only founded on their work, but continues through our efforts to proclaim the Gospel in our lives today.
In this passage of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus focuses his time and attention in the Temple area. This “house of prayer” is a place of teaching, reflection, insight and communion with God and one another. Every time we step inside a church to pray we enter holy ground; may we frequently take time to encounter the Lord and grow as his sons and daughters.
Ezekiel and the Psalmist show how the temple is a source of living water that brings forth life; Jesus speaks of his own body as a temple, and as his followers we discover that we are built upon Christ as the great foundation. May we work together to continue to proclaim the building up of God’s kingdom here on earth as we serve the Church which Christ founded.
God calls us to work together as living stones – building up our families, schools and churches. May we work together, guided by the hand of Jesus, to accomplish our tasks for the service of one another.
Jesus sends out 72 disciples – in pairs, trusting on God’s providence and facing tough struggles – so that they can proclaim the Kingdom of God. Nehemiah and Ezra remind the people of Israel not to forget the Lord. The Church needs both: we come to know God so that we might invite others to know the Lord as well.
