1st Sunday of Advent: When the Son of Man Comes.

advent

Study: Consider one thing you can do today to live your faith.  What would it be?

Pray: Do you have any unfinished business that you need to complete?  Ask the Lord for the strength and conviction to finish it.

Serve: Is there someone in your life who struggles with depression, fear, or doubt?  How can you help them?

Mass Readings – 1st Sunday of Advent

We start a new liturgical year in the Church (that’s “Year A” if you need to use the Lectionary for Sunday readings and “Cycle I” for daily Mass) with a vision of the end of time when the Son of Man comes in glory.

Several key points emerge:

  1. It will happen suddenly, when no one expects it (Gospel)
  2. All nations will come and be taught God’s ways (1st Reading)
  3. It is the Lord who makes peace possible, not humans (1st Reading)
  4. In God’s house there is great joy (Psalm)
  5. We live each day fully prepared, ready if the Lord call us (2nd Reading)

Advent gives us a rich – but very short – opportunity to prepare our hearts for Christmas.  All of these points listed above serve as excellent reminders regarding how we live each day fully invested in the present moment.  We live for the Lord, following his commands, so as to be ready whenever and wherever our lives will take the next turn in the road.

For when God calls us into eternity we hear that the unity, peace, and joy we glimpse in precious moments in this life will come to fulfillment.  United in the Lord, we will join the heavenly host when this world passes away.

I invite us all to consider how we might do one thing better each day – to be more focused, more aware, more present – so that we can give glory and honor to Jesus Christ.  We follow the Lord with all our hearts; may we make the most of every day to live our faith to the fullest.

May this Advent be a time of blessing for us all!

Daily Mass: God Speaks in our Dreams. Catholic Inspiration

Three Great Things

Fr. Andrew’s Daily Mass Homily Podcast – 18th of December in Advent

God sends the angel Gabriel to speak to Joseph in his dreams – the unguarded place in our mind where our personal walls and fences drop as we sort out problems.  Perhaps like Joseph, we might look for the Lord to speak in our dreams..as we seek new ways to live our faith.

Daily Mass: Doing the Lord’s Will

Three Great Things

Fr. Andrew’s Daily Mass Homily – Tuesday of the 3rd Week of Advent

A father asks his two sons to do a task:

  • The first said no, but changes his mind and did it
  • The second said yes, but never did it

Which one did the Father’s will?  The one who acted.  May we turn our “no” to God into a “yes” that is seen in our actions.

Daily Mass: Build on Rock. Catholic Inspiration

Three Great Things

Fr. Andrew’s Daily Mass Homily Podcast (Thursday of the 1st Week of Advent)

When we listen to the Lord and put his teaching into practice, we are like the wise who build their houses on rock.  May the knowledge we possess be transformed into action so that we can face the storms of life with the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ!

Daily Mass: A Vision of Hope. Catholic Inspiration

Three Great Things

Fr. Andrew’s Daily Mass Homily Podcast (Tuesday of the 1st Week of Advent)

The first reading from the prophet Isaiah proclaims a vision of the world – filled with hope – that happens after “a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse.”  May this Good News help us to make course corrections in our life today, so that we will be ready for the Lord’s return.

1st Sunday of Advent – Be Vigilant

resurrection - the Passion of the Christ

Study:  Name a time when you had to be vigilant.  What gave you strength to remain alert, disciplined, and prepared?

Pray:  Is there something in your life that requires vigilance right now?  Pray for the strength to remain focused.

Serve:  Does someone in your life need support to remain vigilant?  How can you help them?

1st Sunday of Advent Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast

The Gospel reading paints a dark picture – filled with worry, anxiety, dismay, and fright.  It warns that some might foolishly respond with drunkenness, others by getting drowsy and paying no attention.  Here’s the proper approach:

“Be vigilant at all times
and pray that you have the strength” – Luke 21:36

Be vigilant.  But what does that mean?  Here are some key points:

  • Alert: focused, paying attention, aware
  • Disciplined: steadfast, consistent
  • Prepared: ready, able to act instantly

The idea is that we are actively engaged in the present moment – watching and waiting – so that when the situation requires our effort we can swiftly give our best.  It takes a lot of energy, effort, and concentration…but then again, at stake is our preparation for the savior of the world.

So as we step into this Advent – where do you see the need for vigilance in your life?  Are there situations or relationships that require attention?  Are there details that need to be addressed?  If the Lord came today are we ready to greet him, or would we be caught unprepared?

This holy season provides us with the gift of time to become vigilant – alert, disciplined, and prepared for the Lord’s return.

Happy Advent!
